Must-See Places in the United States
Enjoy English Haikus on must-see places in the United States which I visited during the sabbatical year in 2007.
The idea occured to me when I got aboard an American Airline from Los Angeles to New York, and read an article from the in-flight magazine Miles Are Forever in December 2007.
I was surprised to see Americans love to write a Japanese Haiku (하이쿠/俳句) poetry with three phrases of 5-7-5 syllables.
Later I came to believe the Japanese Haiku had been influenced by Korean poetry with a fixed form, Sijo (시조/時調) after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in the late 16th century.

When closing my stay in the United States, I was inclined to write down my impressions in English Haiku.
Where should I wish to go again? Which place do I like to recommend my colleagues as foreign tourists to visit?
Frankly speaking, my favorite places are located in and around California where I stayed for one year.
But I travelled around Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New York State.
1 Hollywood 헐리우드 No entertainers on streets. 거리에 연예인은 없고 Only fame-chasing tourists 허명을 쫓아온 관광객들뿐 Make a movie. 본 것만으로 영화가 되는 거리.
2 Getty Center and Huntington Park LA 게티 센터-헌팅턴 파크 Rich men's spending spree 미국 부자들의 돈 씀씀이 what an envious living! 부러운 인생이지만 Left behind precious arts. 사후에 값진 예술작품도 남긴다.
3 Santa Monica Beach 산타모니카 해변 Seaside at hand, 가까운 데 있는 바닷가 Exciting streets restrained, 거리에는 볼 것도 많은데 I could visit only twice. 아끼다 가 본 것은 딱 두 번뿐.
4 Redondo Beach 리돈도 비치 At a beach, 같은 해변가라도 Lovely scenery gives way to 바다의 풍경보다는 Wooden hammer breaking crabs. 킹크랩에 나무 망치를 두들기는 재미.
5 San Francisco 샌프란시스코 Some flowers in hairs? 샌프란시스코에서는 머리에 꽃을 Impatient tourists prefer 단시간의 여행자는 Bay cruise to flowers. 꽃 대신 베이 유람선을 고른다.
6 Monterey Peninsula 몬트레이 반도-페블비치 At wealthiest's zones, 부자들이 안식하는 지역 Visitors willingly pay for 뜨내기 관광객은 통행료 내고 들어가 Brief luxurious scenes. 잠시 부자처럼 행세한다.
7 Yosemite National Park 요세미티 국립공원 Rock mountains beyond the tunnel 터널을 지나자 펼쳐지는 바위 산 Awesome landscape 숨막히는 비경에 Recalls like Mother [Nature]. 언젠가 다시 오고픈 대자연의 품안.
8 Las Vegas 라스베가스 No one invites me. 누가 오라고 한 것도 아닌데 I go there with money, 자기 돈 들고 힘들게 찾아가 But must leave from mirage. 아쉽게 돌아서는 사막의 신기루.
9 Yellowstone National Park 옐로스톤 국립공원 If we went back to nature, 자연으로 돌아간다면 Like bison 저 들소 떼처럼 Can be free amongst danger? 위험하지만 자유롭게 살 수 있을까?
10 Grand Canyon 그랜드캐년 Who made this 누가 이곳에 만들었을까? Deep and grandiose canyons? 깊고 웅장한 협곡을 Real steps confirm Creature's Hand. 들어가봐야 알 수 있지 창조주의 손길을.
11 Sedona-Monument Valley 세도나-모뉴먼트 밸리 Monument Valley provides 모뉴먼트 밸리에서 Gorgeous view. 웅장한 경치에 My breadth was taken away. 숨쉬는 것조차 잊었네.
12 Niagara Falls 나이아가라 폭포 Niagara Falls show 나이아가라 폭포에서 Awesome spectacles. 쏟아지는 장대한 물줄기에 My eyes become rainbows. 내 눈에도 무지개가 떴다.
13 Chicago 시카고 Tall buildings huge lake, 높은 빌딩과 넓은 호수 Many things to see but 구경할 것도 많지만 Sturdy efforts required [for living]. 정붙이고 살려면 노력이 필요해.
14 Manhattan, New York 뉴욕 맨해튼 Big Apple City 뉴욕시는 Attracts all the people 많은 사람을 끌어 모으네 Like powerful magnet. 강력한 지남철처럼.
15 Washington, D.C. 워싱턴 DC No admittance to Federal buildings. 의사당과 백악관에 들어가진 못해도 They are scanned 세계를 움직이는 그들의 활동을 By the Statues [of Lincoln and Jefferson]. 링컨과 제퍼슨의 동상처럼 지켜본다.
16 San Diego 샌디에고 Clean street, good place. 깨끗한 거리, 살기 좋은 도시 The origin of CA, 캘리포니아의 시작이었지만 Another end of USA. 미국의 다른 한쪽 끝.
17 In conclusion 맺음말 America is big, 미국은 땅덩이가 넓어 Time flies; Many things remain 1년이란 짧은 시간 동안 To be sought next. 못 본 것이 더 많구나.
